Why flashcards still win for vocabulary

Grammar can be understood. Vocabulary has to be remembered, thousands of times over, and memory decays on a predictable curve. A word you learn today is about half gone within two days unless you meet it again. Spaced repetition schedules that next meeting for the moment just before you forget, then stretches the gap each time you get it right. The result is that a daily session of ten to twenty minutes keeps thousands of words alive.

The catch with most flashcard apps is making the cards. Two to five minutes per word, times the 1,500 to 2,000 words you need to read comfortably, is weeks of typing before you have studied anything. Flashi removes that step: paste the text you are already studying and the AI builds the deck, term, meaning and an example sentence per card.

Guides by language

What to put on the cards changes by language. Each guide covers the deck structure that works and links to a ready-made starting list.

Japanese

JLPT vocabulary and kanji are the two decks every learner ends up building. Generate N5 to N3 word lists by level, and keep kanji on their own deck so readings and meanings get their own review schedule.

Spanish

Verbs first. A deck of the 100 most common verbs with one example sentence each carries you further than any themed list. Paste a textbook chapter or a news paragraph and the AI pulls the vocabulary out for you.

Korean

Hangul reads fast once learned, so the bottleneck is vocabulary and the honorific pairs. Keep casual and formal forms on the same card so you learn them together.

French

Gender and liaison trip up recall more than meaning does. Put the article on the front of every noun card (le, la) so the gender is learned with the word.

German

Same idea as French, with three genders and plural forms worth putting on the card. Separable verbs deserve an example sentence on the back so the prefix placement sticks.

Italian

Cognates make the first thousand words quick; the hard part is verb conjugation. Build conjugation decks per tense and review them separately from vocabulary.

English exams (TOEIC, TOEFL, IELTS)

Exam English is a vocabulary test in disguise. Generate decks from past-paper reading passages so you study the words the exam actually uses, not a generic list.

Using Anki for language learning?

Anki is excellent at the scheduling and has been the default for language learners for years. Its two costs are the time it takes to build or vet decks, and the price on iPhone: AnkiMobile is $24.99 with no free version. If you mostly study on your phone, Flashi runs the same SM-2 scheduling for free and imports your existing .apkg decks, so nothing you built is lost.

Leaving Quizlet?

Quizlet's free plan caps Learn rounds and practice tests, and its scheduling is not a published spaced repetition method. Export the sets you made as text, save them as a CSV, and import them into Flashi. The cards keep working, now on a real review schedule and without the monthly limits.

How a language deck works in Flashi

Generate decks by level

Type "JLPT N4 core vocabulary" or "Spanish A2 travel phrases", or paste the chapter you are on, and Flashi builds the deck with a meaning and example sentence per card.

Review what is due, daily

Each card comes back on its own SM-2 schedule. Words you know well drop out of the queue; words you miss come back sooner. Ten to twenty minutes a day is enough.

Bring your existing decks

Import Anki .apkg files or a CSV from Quizlet and keep studying the cards you already made.

Study offline, no account

Decks live on your phone. Nothing to sign up for, and the review queue works on the train.

Common questions

What is the best flashcard app for language learning on iPhone?

For most learners, a free app with real spaced repetition and automatic card creation beats a paid one with manual entry. Flashi is free on iPhone, builds a vocabulary deck from any pasted text in seconds, schedules reviews with SM-2 (the same method Anki uses), works offline and imports Anki .apkg decks. If you already have large Anki decks and study on desktop, Anki remains the stronger choice.

Is Anki good for language learning?

Yes, the scheduling is the best studied there is. The costs are time (cards are made by hand, or you vet shared decks of mixed quality) and, on iPhone, $24.99 for AnkiMobile with no free version. Flashi uses the same SM-2 scheduling, is free on iPhone, and imports Anki decks, so switching does not mean starting over.

Does spaced repetition work for language learning?

It is the method with the strongest evidence for vocabulary. Each word is shown again just before you would forget it, so review time stays short while the number of words you know keeps growing. It does not teach grammar or speaking on its own; use it for the vocabulary layer and practise the rest elsewhere.

How many new words a day should I add?

Fifteen to twenty-five. That keeps daily review under 20 minutes and still reaches a conversational vocabulary of roughly 1,500 to 2,000 words in three to four months. More than that and the review queue grows faster than you can clear it.

Can I move my Quizlet or Anki sets into Flashi?

Yes. Anki decks import directly as .apkg files. Quizlet sets export as text from the website (sets you created) which you save as a CSV and import. Both keep the term and definition on each card.

Is Flashi free for language learners?

Free to download, no account needed. The free plan includes one AI-generated deck and two decks total, plus Anki and CSV import. Flashi Pro ($2.99 a month or $24.99 a year) removes those limits. iPhone and iPad only.
